Preview for the Summer Carnival illustration
Written by Sabine ten Lohuis Monday, 14 May 2012 00:00
Last week I was working on a really nice assignment for the upcoming Uitagenda. They asked me to illustrate the cover and to make a huge spread illustration about the Summer Carnival in Rotterdam. The illustration I made for the spread is extra nice because they're going to print it in the center of the magazine, so you can also hang it up as a poster.
As you might know, the Summer carnival is all about the huge over-the-top feathery costumes, loud happy music and lots of dancing, so the illustrations had to reflect this. I have to say, I don't think I've ever used this much color in an illustration before. Here's a little preview of the centerfold illustration in the making.
The new Uitagenda is coming out at the end of May, so I'll post the new illustrations around that time.

Fashion Friday

Here's another quick sketch I made with the Inkling. This time with warm colors and a happy flower pattern, because it's very sunny and warm today.

My first impression of the Inkling
Written by Sabine ten Lohuis Thursday, 10 May 2012 12:29
Guess what finally came in the mail yesterday: the Inkling! I was supposed to get this thing for Christmas, but the Wacom factory got flooded, so there were some delays in the order. But hey, my birthday is in less than 2 weeks so this is actually good timing.
I was quite busy this week with an assignment, so I only got to try the Inkling out yesterday. Some people have been asking me about the Inkling, if it's accurate etc. I don't really know yet, because I only tried it out really fast, but here's my first impression of the Inkling so far.

Written by Sabine ten Lohuis Tuesday, 24 April 2012 19:17
Some time ago, the 11th of March, I went to the Rotterdam tattoo convention with David and My. It was quite impressive and we had a lot of fun. David finally got around to editing all the material we shot into a nice little movie. Check it out:

Logo design for We Own Rotterdam
Written by Sabine ten Lohuis Thursday, 12 April 2012 15:25
Some time ago I made an illustration and a logo design for We Own Rotterdam, which is a very useful website if you want to go out in Rotterdam but need some ideas for where to go. They finally uploaded my illustration and the logo I made for them and I'm very proud to be a part of their website now. Go check it out:

Something equally awesome, is the postcards they printed with my illustration on it! I can't wait to get my hands on some of these.
By the way, I got the photo below from Florian's Instagram stream. He's one of the founders of We Own Rotterdam, so maybe you can go check him out.

Finally painting again
Written by Sabine ten Lohuis Wednesday, 04 April 2012 13:11
Last weekend I finally started painting again after a long time. I've actually been asked to paint on a large piece of wood panel which will be used as a table top. I've made a design showing 3 koi fish swimming in a pond.
I'm really excited about this assignment and I can't wait to finally see the end result when the entire table is done. This is something I've never done before so it's a nice experience to try something new. Plus, I get to paint again!

Monday Blues
Written by Sabine ten Lohuis Monday, 02 April 2012 21:49
I've been painting all day so I made this thing to distract myself. I love my new flower shirt... More about the new painting later. It's been a while since I've painted something, so it's taking me a while to get back into it.

My process for the WOR assignment, from sketch to final illustration
Written by Sabine ten Lohuis Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:05
Hi guys, I just made another tutorial!
This time I'm focussing more on the actual drawing work. I made a lot of photo's to show the entire process in as much detail as possible. In this tutorial I explain what tools I used (and why), how I come up with an idea for an illustration and set up my sketches. And like I said, I also made a lot of photo's to show the whole drawing process since it's a bit harder to just talk about this.
Just click the "read more" button to view the entire post and don't forget to leave me a nice comment when you're done reading. Feedback is always welcome and it helps me improve my tutorial posts.

Ninja Squirrel
Written by Sabine ten Lohuis Tuesday, 27 March 2012 14:27
This is something really silly I've been working on in between jobs to keep myself entertained. I think only Milo and Eva know why I drew this, or maybe you'll get it if you were following my Twitter page two weeks ago.
Any way, I think squirrels would make perfect ninjas. They're already hyper and have all kinds of ninja-like moves. This would make a lot more sense than a ninja turtle. But who am I to judge. I'll get back to my regular work now.

Bad whiskey and guitar music
Written by Sabine ten Lohuis Thursday, 22 March 2012 12:43
Another fast update today, because I have to leave for an appointment in 5 minutes. Here's something I was working on yesterday for the graphic novel I was working on a while back. I'm done drawing and coloring the first novel and now they asked me to make an illustration for the cover of the book. So I've been making some sketches to try out color schemes and techniques for the final illustration.
This guy is one of the main characters of the story and I really like drawing him. He likes bad whiskey and I like drawing guitars so this seemed like the logical thing to draw.

PORTRAIT OF FLORENCE + THE MACHINE
Written by Sabine ten Lohuis Wednesday, 21 March 2012 15:22
I've had this lying around for a while now, figured I should upload it. I made a portrait of Florence (from Florence + the Machine) a while back and this is an alternative version of it with different colors. The old one is more true to the original drawing on paper. But I wasn't too sure about the end result and I wanted to try some different things with the colors. So here's the result of that.
I also have been working on some new assignments, but can't post anything on that yet. I'm hoping I can post some things next week, I'll keep you guys updated.

Just a quick update today to show another awesome feature of my work on Design You Trust. They featured me last Friday, so this sure made my weekend. Now back to work!

We Own Rotterdam
Written by Sabine ten Lohuis Tuesday, 06 March 2012 16:27
So I've been having this idea in my head for a while now. I just finished a big assignment, so I finally had the time to work it out. It took a little longer to finish this than I thought, because I ran into some problems. I already scanned this in last week, but when I saw the final scan on my computer screen it didn't feel right.
Sometimes I have this; the thing looks ok on paper and then something's missing after scanning it in. Normally I just try to let it go, but this time I decided to try out some new things to fix this. So I ended up trying out some new things in Photoshop, which took some time.
I also tried out the powdered graphite on this illustration. I really like the stuff, makes the drawing look a little bit more rough and it's a lot easier and faster to darken certain areas. Hope you guys like the result.
By the way, I documented the process of this drawing really well, so I'm also hoping to make another tutorial soon. This time I want to focus on the actual drawing process and try to show in more detail how I work. But I have to work on some other things first, so more on that later.

Moving Mountains
Written by Sabine ten Lohuis Wednesday, 29 February 2012 21:43
Do you ever start a new drawing and think something along the lines of: "This is going great! I'm drawing so fast, I'm totally going to finish this today and the drawing is going to be awesome!!!" And then it turns out you were wrong, the drawing is taking forever and the more you draw the more you hate everything about it?
Well that's kind of what's happening to me right now. I've entered the dreadful 3rd stage of the creative process: Self-doubt and self-loathing. I figured I'd get out of it eventually, but so far no luck. That's why I've decided to just forget about my current project, put it away for a few days and then take another look at it.
In the mean time, here's a fast drawing I made today to cheer myself up. I also drank liters of coffee and ate a lot of pie. Seriously, for some reason people just kept giving me pie today. It was good timing though.

Preview for new portrait
Written by Sabine ten Lohuis Friday, 24 February 2012 16:01
This week things have calmed down again and I finally had some time to work on my own drawings. I have a lot of new ideas and things I want to draw, so I've been sketching and doodling a lot lately. The past few days I've been working on a new portrait and I tried out some new tools I bought some time ago.
One of the new things I have is powdered graphite. I have to say it's some really great stuff. I always used to work in a very clean, controlled style. Most of the time I just drew everything with my trusty mechanical pencil. But lately I feel like I need to loosen up more and try new things. So I've been buying a lot of new (rougher) tools like thick chunky pencils, charcoal, pastels and now I bought powdered graphite. It comes in a little paper bag so I put the powder in a jar which I can now re-fill whenever I run out.
And like I said, the stuff is fantastic. It's great for covering large areas without straining your hand too much. You can just brush or rub some of the stuff over your paper. It's also great for loose sketching and shading. Maybe I'll make another tutorial to explain more about it later on, but I need to try some more things first.
For now, here's a little preview of what I'm working on at the moment. I wanted to finish this drawing yesterday, but writing the tutorial took longer than I thought. So now I'm hoping to finish this today. Let's get back to the drawing board!

My process for an illustration assignment, Working with a deadline
Written by Sabine ten Lohuis Thursday, 23 February 2012 15:27
I've had these photo's lying around for a while now. I made them to write another tutorial about my drawing process, but things were so crazy around here that I never really felt like writing the text. Luckily things have calmed down a bit this week so I took some time to make new drawings and also write you guys a new tutorial.
I'd like to show the process from start to finish for the illustration you can see on the photo below. And also talk a bit about the entire process of the assignment I made for Label Magazine some time ago. In this tutorial I will explain a bit more about making sketches, show some other tools I use and there is some info on my work space and working habits.

Featured on Juxtapoz
Written by Sabine ten Lohuis Thursday, 16 February 2012 17:44
Also, I got featured again on the Juxtapoz website! You might remember they wrote a short article about my Beard Project some time ago. This time they featured my entire portfolio, so that was a very pleasant surprise.
I'm still hoping one day they'll ask me for an interview for their magazine. I love their magazine and really enjoy reading the interviews they make, so that would be a dream come true.
You can view the page with the feature here by the way.
